Barbell lunges are very useful for building overall strength and endurance. These should be used as one of the core exercises for your workouts since they are extremely effective. I would recommend taking a look at the dumbbell lunges page if you haven’t already.
To begin barbell lunges, load a bar with about 15-30% of your maximum (or just use the bar alone). Place the bar on your shoulder as you would for squats and then kneel down in the lunge position. Do not touch your knee to the ground…just get close. Once you’re down, push back up with your front leg.
That’s about it for barbell lunges. As always, be sure to stretch out thoroughly before you start your workout.
